Winter Wedding at Grand Willow Inn Mt Vernon

Grand Willow Inn Winter Wedding

I love Winter Weddings!

Alyssa and Ethan had come to us for our Christmas Minis, and then the following year she let me know they were now engaged when they booked their mini. I was BEYOND excited and made sure to incorporate Lucy (their adorable corgi) in the photos to show off the ring. Not long after, Alyssa inquired about their winter wedding (she knows I love Christmas too!) and I was hooked. We had also never photographed at Grand Willow Inn, so even more to be excited for.

I asked Alyssa a few questions about their story:

How did the two of you meet?
Ethan and I met in the midst of the Pandemic shutdown. My best friend K has a close friend named N who is close friends with another girl named H-who’s ex boyfriend started dating a girl named J. It’s quite the web-but, it boils down to N and K were messaging and J had asked if either of them had a friend that would be interested in her sweet guy best friend. K then contacted me and asked if I would be interested-I said sure! I added Ethan on Facebook and we started talking that day. We started texting, calling and having FaceTime dates. We decided to “break quarantine” on April 15th to meet in person. Took a walk around Mill Creek Town Center and the rest is history.

How did the proposal happen?
I had been recovering from some surgery complications at my parents house after a few roughy few months. Ethan and I were living apart as Stanwood didn’t have close by hospitals. In October, he said that he needed me to come with him to a VA appointment to set up some insurance beneficiary things. He comes and picks me up and we head to said “appointment.” He the. Says we need to make a pit stop by a friends house on the way-this friend was gone and hanging at Mission Beach. Ethan takes me by the water and we are just chatting. Then he pops the question. I turn to see my best friend and her hubby hiding behind a log and his friend in a kayak lighting fireworks from the water.

Why did you choose this venue for your winter wedding?
The grand staircase is stunning-my favorite movie growing up was Beauty and the Beast, and the staircase just reminded me of Belle coming down the stairs for the iconic Tale as Old As Time dance.

If we were to run into you on a relaxed day off, what would you be doing?
Most likely drinking coffee and eating breakfast (that we made together) our deck and hanging with Lucy (corgi).

  • Look, I SUCK at being in photos if no one tells me how to move myself to look my best. I *need* guidance. Normal people feel like this – we need help when we’re in front of the camera. That’s why, when I’m working with clients, I like to do a little bit of show-and-tell. I’ll show you a bit of what I’m looking for (even if it means I look ridiculous), where to stand, what to do with your hands, all of that. Then, I guide. I prefer posing that looks authentic and natural and includes movement (which helps when you have a videographer, too), so I have a ton of amazing prompts I use to get those natural smiles and laughs. I am also a personal cheerleader. I am going to be complimenting the hell out of you during photos. I can’t help it, it’s my brains natural tick when I’m in the zone – I don’t even realize I’m doing it until someone giggles. Fair warning. No need to say anything (I totally get feeling awkward when you’re complimented, I never know how to respond either), just keep rocking your awesome photos and all will be great. I even use prompts during wedding party photos, because we know that the point is to have fun, not just smile at the camera like statues. I’ll also check your hair, jewelry, tie, how you’re holding your bouquet, etc, to make sure everything looks right. I don’t love editing, and would rather get as much right in camera as I can. And I REALLY love connection. I say things like “all hands on deck” which means you should be touching eachother with both hands because when you’re not – it looks disconnected and uninterested. And we don’t want that.

That's why I've created a wedding process that will let you not only feel completely in control, but also allow you to trust and let go on your wedding day. With over 500 weddings under my belt, I know how to love on you and your partner through every decision and how to protect your wedding day experience through any chaos.

Hot and can't get to your chair to put your coat down? I've got you. Brought comfortable shoes for the reception? No worries, they're already at your chair, and I will totally help you get out of those uncomfortable heels and into those comfy shoes. And back into the heels if you want to make sure you wear them for the first dance. And back out of them to just dance barefoot for the rest of the night.
I help hold your plates while you dish up your dinner and carry them to your seat so you don't spill on yourself while you talk to people on the way back to your table.
Want a drink from the bar? We've got you. Wherever you are in the reception, we'll bring it to you. If your bustle rips, or your straps break, or your suit pants rip, we've got a sewing kit and bustle pins... all in our handy packs. Sweaty and shiny because of the heat during portraits? We carry blotting tissues. Worried about sunburns? We've got sunscreen that isn't greasy. If we notice your hair fall out of place or your bustle coming undone, we'll discreetly take care of it for you.
If you get a stain, we know how to get rid of it and carry a special magic spray to do just that. Overwhelmed and need a minute? We don't mind being the bad guy and taking you away for "photos" (read: a few minutes to just regroup and re-center yourself - no photos involved).
Have an obnoxious uncle or overbearing aunt? We've got jobs to help them feel important and to keep them from impacting your experience on your wedding day. ❤️
  • Kate here! I get a lot of comments about my on-body gear setup on wedding days. This is basically my superhero suit, and not just for photos.

The photography focused setup allows me to carry all of my lenses, batteries, memory cards, and personal lighting so that I never have to go to my camera bag throughout the day.

And then there is my secret weapon: my tactical waist bag (that's code word for fanny pack). We joke that this bag is a bit like Hermiones' bottomless bag because it can hold SO MUCH MORE than you can imagine.

I keep a small version of an emergency kit in this bag, I can hold the timeline, family group lists, pens, my walkie talkie base (yes Josh and I use headsets and walkies to keep in communication), the brides touch up kit, sunscreen, sunglasses, my phone, waterbottles for me and the couple, bobby pins, the ring until its time to go down the aisle, speeches, tissues for tears, breath mints, scissors, the garter so you don't forget to put it on for reception, etc. Yes, all at once. I love my little magic pack.

This setup allows for the day to flow as smoothly as possible and for me to love on our couples and their closest friends and family.

I can also hands-free my camera with my setup to help carry the train of the brides gown, carry drinks to you, carry dinner plates to your table, help fix a loose piece of hair or bustle your dress.

Most surprising, I can even get low with the best of them for the unique angles (and to bust out some dance floor moves).

Yes, it probably weighs as much as I do. 💪💪

But it's so worth it when everything I need for almost any situation is right at my fingertips, and I know I won't miss a moment.
  • The in-between and unexpected are what we live for. When Moms toast goes a little ... sideways ... we will make sure you never forget.
  • I was telling a bride tonight that I can look at photos from every wedding I've done and remember something impactful from that day.

Like this one. He swore he wouldn't cry seeing his little girl in her gown, but I knew better.

Right after this moment he looked at me and said "delete that" ... but he knew better.

I love nothing at weddings more than emotional moments.
  • There was no Dads First Look planned at this wedding ... but our experience means we watch for things anyways.

You can rarely plan for the most emotional moments, and the weight and depth of these slices of time only grow as the years pass.

I LOVE to love on our couples. This is my "why". The majority of our clients work in service/helper type careers and are VERY Type-A ... and anyone who is type a knows how hard it is to let go and let others do for you. Guess what? I'm also a Type-A.
That's why I've created a wedding process that will let you not only feel completely in control, but also allow you to trust and let go on your wedding day. With over 500 weddings under my belt, I know how to love on you and your partner through every decision and how to protect your wedding day experience through any chaos.
It also allows me to give that extra love you deserve and so rarely get in your helper job.

Kate here!

But it's so worth it when everything I need for almost any situation is right at my fingertips, and I know I won't miss a moment.
Kate here!

The in-between and unexpected are what we live for. When Moms toast goes a little ... sideways ... we will make sure you never forget.

I was telling a bride tonight that I can look at photos from every wedding I've done and remember something impactful from that day.

Like this one. He swore he wouldn't cry seeing his little girl in her gown, but I knew better.

Right after this moment he looked at me and said "delete that" ... but he knew better.

I love nothing at weddings more than emotional moments.

There was no Dads First Look planned at this wedding ... but our experience means we watch for things anyways.

You can rarely plan for the most emotional moments, and the weight and depth of these slices of time only grow as the years pass.
